Year-round celebrations that bring the community together
Signature Events
Owen Sound's festival calendar is one of the richest in Grey County, with signature events that draw visitors from across Ontario and beyond.
Festival of Northern Lights
Owen Sound's most beloved winter tradition transforms the downtown core and Harrison Park into a magical wonderland of over one million lights. Running from mid-November through mid-January, the festival features illuminated displays, animated figures, themed light tunnels, and a driving route through Harrison Park that has become a Grey County holiday tradition. Opening night includes a spectacular community celebration with fireworks, live entertainment, and the ceremonial lighting ceremony. The festival also features weekly events including horse-drawn wagon rides, carolling, holiday markets, and family activities throughout the season.
Summerfolk Music & Crafts Festival
One of Canada's premier folk music festivals, Summerfolk has been drawing music lovers to Kelso Beach Park on Georgian Bay since 1976. The three-day festival features performances on multiple stages from national and international artists, alongside workshops, artisan vendors, a children's area, and the kind of spontaneous musical collaborations that only happen at the best festivals. The waterfront setting adds a special dimension, with Georgian Bay sunsets providing a natural backdrop to evening headline performances. Weekend and day passes are available, and the festival campground extends the experience for dedicated attendees.
Salmon Spectacular
Each autumn, thousands of Chinook salmon return from Georgian Bay to spawn in the Sydenham River, creating one of Ontario's great wildlife spectacles. The Salmon Spectacular fishing derby celebrates this natural event with a multi-week competition that attracts anglers from across the province. Beyond the derby, the salmon run itself is a free and remarkable experience. Visitors can watch the large fish navigating rapids and leaping obstacles from viewing points along the river, particularly near the 10th Street bridge and in Harrison Park. Local restaurants feature fresh salmon specials during the run.
Owen Sound Farmers Market
Operating year-round on Saturday mornings, the Owen Sound Farmers Market is both a shopping destination and a community gathering place. Local farmers, bakers, cheesemakers, and artisans offer the best of Grey County's agricultural bounty. The market features seasonal produce, meats, baked goods, preserves, maple syrup, honey, and handcrafted items. Prepared food vendors serve breakfast and lunch made with market ingredients. The market moves indoors during winter months, maintaining its role as a weekly community tradition regardless of the season.
